Custom POF lighting was the primary application of POF from the 1970s to 1990s, when the LED was widely introduced as a viable light source and caused the market to flatten. There has since been a resurgence in plastic light pipes, with LEDs as a light source. Combined with LED technology, the inexpensive and versatile nature of POF has lent itself to a wide spectrum of creative and unique lighting fixtures and uses.
